What I know about Mixtures and Solutions

What I know about Mixtures and Solutions

A mixture is 2 things mixed together to form a group of things. A solution is a special mixture formed when a material is dissolved in water. They are clear and cannot be separated with a filter.

When you evaporate salt and water, the water gets evaporated but the salt does not. The salt has nowhere to go, so they join up together (the salt) and form a large crystal. Sometimes the crystal has an X on it, which means it is sea salt. But it is poisonous if you eat it! Always wash your hands after you are done with an experiment.

The properties of a salt crystal are: they are transparent, they are in the size of a square or a rectangle, and they have Xs on them. A salt crystal:

See? It's transparent, squarish, and has Xs!

Salt and water combined is a mixture because 2 things are mixed together: salt and water. It is also a solution because when salt and water is mixed, the salt dissolves.

If you put an ice cube into root beer, it creates a mixture of solid, liquid, and gas. You can only see gas on smoggy days, but if you trap air in a bottle, close the lid, and wait, you might see gas if there is enough air trapped.
